The Juilliard School

In January, Juilliard welcomed Creative Associates group the Builders Association to the school to lead a weeklong workshop with a dozen Drama Division students in their second, third, and fourth years of training. Since its founding in 1994, this cross-media performance company has been working to find ways to incorporate new technologies into theatrical spaces and examine the impact of media on culture and community. This year, the Builders Association became the first performance company to be part of Juilliard’s Creative Associates program, in which artists whose work exemplifies collaborative and interdisciplinary innovation have residencies at the school. During the Builders’ intensive, team members worked with Juilliard students to explore virtual reality onstage, with the help of headsets, a team of technicians, and lots of creative collaboration. The students, most of whom entered the workshop knowing very little about this technology, left having created a series of short pieces that allowed them to explore interactions in both physical and virtual reality spaces. Honorary doctorate recipient and artistic director of the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance Janet Eilber (BFA ’73, dance) was celebrated with a moving speech from Alicia Graf Mack (dean and director of the Dance Division) and an interactive excerpt from Graham’s Appalachian Spring that was led by faculty member Terese Capucilli with support from graduating dancers Lindsay Phillips and Rachel Lockhart and performed by commencement attendees. Juilliard celebrated its 118th commencement Friday, May 19, 2023, at Alice Tully Hall. The ceremony was also livestreamed around the world. As part of Juilliard’s 118th commencement, Wynton Marsalis (’81, trumpet) honored composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal with a speech highlighting Pascoal’s many artistic achievements and innovations. Juilliard celebrated its 118th commencement Friday, May 19, 2023, at Alice Tully Hall. The ceremony was also livestreamed around the world. Pascoal was one of five distinguished arts world figures to receive Juilliard honorary doctorates. The others were New York Philharmonic president and CEO Deborah Borda; dancer, actor, teacher, and artistic director of the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance Janet Eilber (BFA ’73, dance); award-winning actor Wendell Pierce (Group 14); and conductor and music director of the New Jersey Symphony Xian Zhang. Tianjin Juilliard held its second commencement ceremony on May 19, 2023, honoring 35 students receiving Master of Music degrees.
