Review: MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET at Titusville Playhouse
Orlando: Joseph Harrison on September 08, 2024

On Tuesday evening, December 4, 1956, in Memphis, Tennessee, while a winter chill bit into passersby at the corner of Union Avenue and Marshall Avenue something big was heating up the studio of Sun Records on that very same corner. Sun Records founder and producer, Sam Phillips had brought together a group of young musicians who were just starting out on their long and storied careers, for that one night only, to jam together. At the time, that gathering may have been unremarkable, but looking back years later, Mr. Phillips called the group the “Million Dollar Quartet” – since it was made up of what would become some of the biggest names in Rock and Roll – Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley. And while the recordings of that night took many years to be released, audiences have the chance to witness the gathering for themselves on stage in MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET – the latest musical offering at the Titusville Playhouse. And believe me - this gathering is electric, exciting and thrilling to witness.

Review: BBC PROMS: PROM 62: RATTLE CONDUCTS MAHLER'S 6TH, Royal Albert Hall
UK / West End: Louise Penn on September 08, 2024

There were no phone screens, no sotto voce conversations, no fidgeting, as a packed Hall watched the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in rapt appreciation. Each instrument had its moment. The dual harps added a cool clarity, the double basses a morose touch, the trombones a sweet elegance. This was a vibrant reading of a modern classic in expert hands.

Review: TRIAL AND ERROR at Baxter Theatre Centre Explores Law as Theatre
South Africa: Jaime Uranovsky on September 08, 2024

Review: THE NIGHT ALIVE at Altarena Playhouse
San Francisco / Bay Area: Kelly Rogers Flynt on September 07, 2024

THE NIGHT ALIVE is brimming with tension, humor, and talent. With characters that are rich in nuance but light on acuity, the show winds its way through rough waters. With more heart than wit to see them through, they grapple with big problems and hard circumstances with every moment adding to your desire for their triumph. With more laughs and smiles than one would expect in such gritty subject matter, THE NIGHT ALIVE, is a gumbo of well-blended ingredients.

Review: DAMN YANKEES at Reboot Theatre Company
Seattle: Jay Irwin on September 07, 2024

Dear Readers, if you’ve seen a show from Reboot Theatre Company, you know they like to tackle old gems and turn them on their heads with non-traditional casting and perspectives. And just like when companies attempt to transplant Shakespeare or other works into different locales or time periods, sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. The major test on whether it works, for me at least, is “does the change lend itself to a new an interesting perspective of the piece?” Fortunately, Reboot’s current production of “Damn Yankees” does give us a new and interesting perspective. Unfortunately, the execution of that perspective needs some work.

Review: JOYRIDE THE MUSICAL at MalmöOpera
Sweden: Annette Stolt on September 07, 2024

An instant success! Magnificent cast, energetic, fun - if you like the music from Roxette this is a must!

Review: ANYTHING GOES at Gettysburg Community Theatre
Central Pennsylvania: Andrea Stephenson on September 07, 2024

Anything Goes is high energy, and the intimacy of the small theatre setting lends itself well to this show, making the audience feel like they’re on the boat with the characters. This is the best production of Anything Goes that this reviewer has seen. Grab your passports and get your tickets for the SS American before it’s too late!

Review: COWBOYS WITH QUESTIONS at 12TH AVE ARTS
Seattle: Shelley Dean on September 07, 2024

Digesting art that clearly portrays substantial and timely topics, such as the dynamics of power and its abuse, is paramount. From movies, books, and plays, this highly important topic has been in the news and conversation cycle lately. Cowboys With Questions, penned by local playwright Rebecca Tourino Collinsworth, is no different. The show, meticulously directed by Suz Pontillo, runs from now until September 15 at 12 AVE ARTS.

Review: LAUNCHING THEIR 26TH SEASON INTO THE STRATOSPHERE WITH SELINA FILLINGER'S POTUS at JOBSITE THEATER
Tampa/St. Petersburg: Drew Eberhard on September 07, 2024

Alice Paul...remember her? In 1920, she was THE WOMAN, THE SUFFRAGIST, who secured the right to vote for women, and wrote the unratified Equal Rights Amendment. Further explanation of her movement can be found in the recent musical Suffs, Shaina Taub’s musical which more recently won Best Book of a Musical at this years Tonys Ceremony. However, this is not Suffs, nor is this a musical. Instead, this is the blistering, hilarious, farcical take on women in the White House behind every dumb ass that could’ve ever held power. Its borderline lumbering subtitle says it all, “Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive.” Selina Fillinger’s hilarious play proves just that. Women are in power, and behind every great man is a woman trying to save the day. Feminism at its finest, and proving that this is the moment to be alive.

Review: The Carrollwood Players Production of ANNIE
Tampa/St. Petersburg: Peter Nason on September 07, 2024

It has a lot going for it, but it's a hit and miss affair, with moments that make us soar and moments that make us cringe.

Review: MEMNON at The Getty Villa
Los Angeles: Andrew Child on September 07, 2024

Though the language is easy to imagine as the foundation for a more ostentatious spectacle, the sweeping narration is deftly relayed by a mighty fistful of actors and a polished trio of dancers in a way that allows grand battles and weighty sociopolitical musings to service the intrinsic poetry of the contemporary text.

Review: POTUS at Winding Road Theater Ensemble
Phoenix: Zach Wetzel on September 07, 2024

POTUS is a dark comedy filled with strong performances.

Review: 007: A NIGHT OF BOND Stirs Up The Green Room 42
Cabaret: Sharon Ellman on September 06, 2024

This reviewer was taken aback by these stunning voices. A night of James Bond songs on September did not disappoint this James Bond fan. Many of the performers are as amazing as the seasoned performers who originated the tunes over the years.

Review: METAMORPHOSES at the Baxter Studio Is Liquid Food of the Gods
South Africa: Jaime Uranovsky on September 06, 2024

I’ve loved Greek mythology since I was little. This probably had a lot to do with Rick Riordan’s fabulous Percy Jackson series. It’s been a while since I engaged with the content and this production sucked me right back in and reminded me how enchanting Greek mythology is. But it takes a special kind of show to outdo sacred childhood nostalgia.
